  • Asia Regional Workshop on PROMOTING SUSTAINABILITY OF COMMUNITY-BASED RURAL TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE
                           at BITS, Pilani from
    September 6 - 8, 2004.

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and International Forum for Rural Transport and Development (IFRTD) have jointly produced a toolkit to guide Rural Transport practitioners and planners to design sustainable small-scale or community-based rural transport infrastructure projects. The toolkit brings in best practices and case studies from different parts of the world, which prove that community-managed and small-scale projects are sustainable at the community level. It envisages a greater understanding of the political and social relationships between stakeholders and promotes recognition of the interdependence of rehabilitation and maintenance as a condition of sustainability.

The involvement of the communities and consideration of social benefits in rural infrastructure planning, construction and maintenance of rural infrastructure are vital factors. The planned series of workshops in Asia, Franco Phone Africa and Latin America will draw all relevant stakeholders (planners, practitioners, civil society organisations) together to review and analyse the information provided in the toolkit and to identify potential avenues for the best adaptation of these approaches. The International Focus Group (IFG) on Rural Road Engineering is expected to take the lead role in pushing forward the recommendations of these workshops internationally through its network of rural road planners and engineers.

The Workshop will draw upon the lessons learnt from different experiences around the world to highlight maintenance and the socio-political implications of relationships between stakeholders as key determinants of a successful and sustainable intervention.

Communicating formal and technical messages is vital for the success, growth and sustenance of any organization be it academic or business. Today, the reputation of an organization, industry or nation depends upon the quality and quantity of information they transmit and exchange. Gone are the days when information dissemination used to be earmarked for a counted group in an organization. With the phenomenal advancement in technology, information has now become a common commodity. This fact makes it necessary for both the institutions offering professional education and the business organizations to reorient themselves towards a better understanding of the process of transmitting and receiving information with greater effectiveness and efficiency than before through oral and written media

  • National Seminar on challenges posed by IPR regimes (Download Registration form)

at BITS, Pilani from September 15-16 2004

In globalization scenario, IPR issues are impacting many vital policy issues such as health, environment, trade, electronic commerce etc. It has now become necessary to expose and equip all concerned especially, the policy makers with required skills and knowledge to enable them to perform their functions far more effectively. During the present century, intellectual property would play even more important role on the international stage. The promotion and effective protection of intellectual property is inextricably linked with any policy for sustained social, economic, cultural and technological development. Knowledge of IPR has gained further importance for researchers, S&T administrators, policy makers and innovative students.

The Internet, new technologies and movements such as open source management have greatly challenged traditional notions of property, authorship, originality and ownership. We need to find answer to the question as to what do these challenges mean for our understanding of IPR and what alternate accounts of IPR are required to be able to argue for a larger notion of the public domain in the context of IPR?

The purpose of this National Seminar is to bring the Scientists, Researchers, Academicians, Technocrats, Bureaucrats and Policy makers on one platform to share knowledge and views about IPR and deliberate on challenges posed by IPR regimes.

This Seminar is sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, New Delhi.

  • National conference on STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING AND MECHANICS (sem 04)
                           at BITS, Pilani from
    September 24-25, 2004

Best planning, design and construction of various structures comprise maximum return with least expenditure. In the olden days, engineers used to tackle these tasks through their experience and rules of thumb developed over the years. To achieve best results in terms of cost and utility proper understanding of the behavior of these structures is necessary. Behavior of a structure under different loading conditions is a very complex phenomenon, which requires interdisciplinary discussions. Although structural engineering developed a lot in the past still due to the phenomenal advancements in science & technology and to cater the demand of present age, improvements are needed. With the advent of modern computational tools it is possible now to numerically model the structural behavior and obtain the required results, in-place of doing the expansive experiments. Therefore, it is mandatory to sit and discuss the planning, analysis and design in structural engineering in the light of modern developments. This conference will provide an opportunity to the researchers, scientists, engineers, builders and the students in the field of structural engineering to interact with each other in a fruitful manner.

  • Symposium on Prediction in Ungauged Basins for Sustainable Water Resources Planning and Management (PUBSWRPM-2004))

at BITS, Pilani on October 30, 2004

In most of the river basins across the world, human activities have disturbed the natural hydrological and ecological regimes. This is especially true for the river basins in developing countries where climatic variability assessment and basin development have taken place with little or no hydrological data. This led to the unplanned depletion of water resources and degradation of ecosystem, consequently affecting the quality of human life. New and advanced methodologies are essential to predict the hydrologic and other relevant data about the ungauged or poorly gauged basins. Thus there is an urgent need for research in this direction to facilitate appropriate policy measures. To assess the present status and identify further lines of research, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, is organising a Symposium on “Prediction in Ungauged Basins for Sustainable Water Resources Planning and Management (PUBSWRPM-2004)” on October 30, 2004. The objective of the symposium is to reduce the gap between research and implementation and mobilise the scientific community in a coordinated and effective way to address this major challenge. Besides technical sessions, a brain storming session has been planned to discuss the specific problems in dealing with the ungauged or poorly gauged basins in India. The enlightening deliberations of the symposium will help in framing suitable policy measures which can be implemented by the concerned organisations.

  • Workshop on Analog and RF Design

at BITS, Pilani during March 16-18, 2007

VLSI is the emerging area of interest among the researchers and engineers from Information Technology, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics Engineering domain. With the advent of system on chip (SOC) design, analog designs are needed to be incorporated on to the same chip as that of digital. This calls for stringent constraints on analog integrated circuits and new challenges to be dealt with like noise, stability and parasitic effects in the circuits. So, analog design has become far more challenging and demanding since last few years which requires efficient designers.

Similarly, due to a recent boom in the mobile relating applications in the wireless communications, there has been lot of demand for the trained manpower, who understand both the aspects of the design at radio frequencies viz. a sound knowledge in communication concepts as well as a capability to create the designs on silicon chip. It must be highlighted that CMOS technology has started making its roots in the RF technology relating applications only since last decade, but the growth has been at indeed a very rapid pace.
