Technology Innovation Centre (TIC)


Technology Innovation Centre at BITS, Pilani has been established to   enhance research and development activities. Engineers/ Scientists from industry as well as incubates bring their R & D projects for investigations in the campus.  Engineers / Scientists from industry bring their ongoing  research and developmental projects for investigations in the campus. Such investigations are carried out in collaboration with Institute faculty associated with students registered in assigned research or project courses. Several Industries have been participating in this programme. While in campus, these engineers and scientists from industry are given a de-facto status of faculty members , so they are encouraged to extend their professional interest much beyond the original scope of operation

Application Process

A company proposal must be sent to  Prof. AryaKumar, Unit Chief (EDIPR), BITS-Pilani  either through E-mail or/ post/ phone/personal meeting. (email:aryakumar@bits-pilani.ac.in, Phone-01596-245073 Ext 209. Alternatively proposal may also be sent to Dr. Anu Gupta (anug@bits-pilani.ac.in),  Phone-01596-245073 Ext 233, 463

The proposal must contain following details

  • Name of the company
  • Address with contact E-mail/ Phone
  • Name and email of the company mentor who will provide guidance to the students
  • Brief write-up about the company
  • Title of the project/ s
  • Skill set required
  • Eligibility criteria
  • Approximate number of students required
  • Approximate duration of the project
  • Requirement of  Institute resources and faculty mentoring

Selection of Students

Based on the details provided by the company to the institute, notices shall be displayed to inform the students about the availability of TIC projects. Students should submit their applications in soft-copy to Dr. Anu Gupta (anug@bits-pilani.ac.in, anugrajiv@gmail.com). Off campus student can also apply but he should be on-campus to work for the project.

Continuous Monitoring & Guidance

As a part of education, this project course follows a method of learning and, therefore, the student's actual day-to-day task involvement  constitute the central thread of the learning process.

Students are continuously monitored by a company person (mentor) and TIC projects instructor-in-charge. Mentor  would prepare a Task plan for each student with time lines mentioned

For  these industrial assignments, the projects would be challenging and the design/code development deadlines would  be stringent . All students must adhere to deadlines strictly. It is expected from each student to be regular in his work and assignment completion. Project work must be done upto the satisfaction of the mentor

The evaluation will recognize this aspect by demanding day-to-day productivity and punctuality of the student. A continuous interaction with the mentor/s  and Instructor-in Charge is a must in this course.

Institute Support (Lab facilities/ Faculty Mentoring)

If request is made by the concerned industry, Institute shall provide for faculty support on payment basis. Institute shall arrange for a faculty to monitor the progress of students through out the semester.  Students would be required to interact with both the mentors on regular basis.

Institute shall arrange laboratories and Internet Connectivity , microphone, speakers/ meeting room for regular online-meeting (through SKYPE)  between mentor and project students

Evaluation & Grading

Each student should adhere to the plan of work decided for him/her by IC and mentor/s . Mentor should regularly monitor the progress of the project  ( against targets set and targets achieved every week ) accordingly and inform IC . IC and other TIC  members would also evaluate the progress of the project

Institute Overhead/ Stipend

The industry shall pay for the services offered by the institute at the end of semester. The payment structure shall be discussed at the beginning of the project/s.

Eligibility

Guidelines to students  for applying for TIC PROJECT

ü Please check your eligibility before you apply for TIC PROJECT

Eligibility for TIC PROJECTS    BITS C383/ BITS C381

 

·        First year and ME students cannot take TIC project

 

·        2ND  year  students can take TIC project, only if they are allowed an elective slot else not. Please check that in your discipline, you are allowed an elective slot in 2nd year. Only then apply

 

·        3RD  year students can take only one project— available categories ----sop/lop/ cop/SP/ tic.    If you have already registered for SOP/ COP/LOP/ SP ,then you can’t take TIC as only one is allowed. Else you need to drop SOP/ COP/LOP/ SP

 

·        4TH  year students can take  overall 2 projects only--- available categories----cop/sop/lop/tic/ SP

 

·        Students going for PS next sem.   cannot apply for TIC PROJECT next semester

 

·        Dual degree/ single degree students who will be doing thesis next semester can not apply for TIC project

 

ü If  these projects are offered just before registration in a semester, then Students eligible for TIC projects can take them only against substitution of a course or addition of course in their course package.

ü If you have plans to drop the TIC project later, do not apply for it.  Because once selected, we will not allow you  to drop/ cancel it

ü Always send a proper resume with your basic personal information ,  degree progamme, CGPA, relevant courses done, projects completed, technical skill acquired till date, your ID no. , cell phone no. , alternative email id  in your mail

ü Your resume file (doc/ pdf) should be named as   your name.pdf / your name. doc

ü Always mention  the company name and project title ( or  titles in the order of priority, if you are interested in more then one project offered by same company)  you are applying for,   in your resume

ü Please note that incomplete  resumes shall be rejected

ü TIC projects are offered by company. So required output has to be delivered in given time. So, if you do not have necessary skills or have not done relevant courses, do not apply.  These projects are for applying your skills, knowledge to get results and not for learning them. 

ü Do not apply if you anticipate yourself to be too busy in your own work next semester. Hard work and timely submissions of your results are highly desirable. Poor outcomes may impact your  grade in this project
