Dual Degree Scheme
One of the most popular flexibilities provided in the Institute's educational structure is the dual degree scheme under which it is possible for a student to work for and complete concurrently two integrated first degrees within a reasonable period of time. All students admitted to Group B programmes are given an opportunity to work under this scheme for one of the Group A programmes also; assignment being made by competition on their performance during the first year at BITS.
In the assignment of dual degree, first priority is given to the students in Group B seeking a second degree under this scheme from amongst the programmes in Group A. After fully satisfying the known needs of the first priority, a second operation is done to consider the other priority, namely, students in any group seeking a second degree from amongst the programmes in another group. While it would be academically and procedurally acceptable for a student admitted in Group A or B programmes to seek a second degree in Group C in the dual degree scheme, the reverse process is not normally possible. However, a student admitted to Group C will be eligible to compete for dual degree for any degree of Group C or any degree in Group B or MMS only in Group A.
Transfer
Within the same tier :
BITS is strongly wedded to orienting education to meet the rapidly changing needs and challenges of the environment. If university education is an organised attempt to help people become intelligent and able to face open-ended real-life situations, it must at least have an economic relevance to society.
The Practice School (PS) method of education, a controlled simulation of real life, adopted at BITS creates the circumstance whereby the university is linked with the world of work. The curriculum through PS finds a formal method of bringing the reality of the world of work into the educational process. In short, it is a part of the total programme and takes the class-room for a period of 7.5 months to a professional location where the students and the faculty get involved in real-life problems. Thus the PS institutionalises efforts to build the long-needed bridge between the professional world and the educational world. Particularly for science and humanities streams the PS constitutes a bold and radical educational innovation with no parallel.
The programme requires that the students undergo the rigour of the professional world in form as well as in substance, providing them an opportunity to apply their class-room knowledge to live situations. It differs from the 'Practical Training' as well as `Sandwich Schemes' in as much as the entire student education at a PS station is supervised by the BITS faculty resident at the station. Credits obtained by the student at the station form a part of his total credit towards his degree.
From first degree to higher degree/Ph.D. degree:
In the case of bright and promising students of the Integrated First degree programmes a transfer to Higher Degree and/or Ph.D. degree may also be provided.
Between Ph.D. and higher degree programmes:
Under special situations a transfer between Ph.D. and higher degree programmes may be permitted. Movement in either direction is theoretically possible. The Institute's Academic Regulations must be consulted for details.
Audit
The facility of taking a course on audit is principally conceived to give an opportunity to a person to update his knowledge in selected courses. It is expected to meet primarily the needs of casual students (not enrolled for degree). No degree of the Institute can be acquired by merely taking courses on audit.
There are certain courses like Foreign Languages, Music, etc. which are neither part of a degree programme nor are available through electives. Any student who wishes to take such courses can take them only on audit basis and also on payment of additional fees.
Other Flexibilities
The structure of degree programmes and the Academic Regulations also provide certain other flexibilities like choice of electives, number of electives, repetition of courses, departure from normal pace, withdrawal from or substitution of course(s) etc.
