Trainee Engineer at Rourkela Steel Plant learning about various
metallurgical and mechanical processes involved in iron and steel making.
Training was based at Hot and Cold Rolling Mills, Blast Furnace,
Steel Making Furnaces, Coke-Ovens and N.D.T. section.
Diesel
Locomotive Works, Varanasi (June 1970 to August 1970)
Trainee
Engineer at Diesel locomotive works learning about various manufacturing
aspects of diesel engines. The
training was based at both the Engine and Locomotive sections. Central
Metallurgical Laboratory having NDT facilities was also included in the
training schedule.
Mirlees Blackstone Ltd., Stockport, Cheshire, U.K. (November 1971 to January 1972)
Training
in various aspects of Value Analysis and Value Engineering with special
reference to diesel generating sets and automobile accessories.
Cranfield University , U.K. (February 1973 to October 1975)
Doctoral Research Scholar on a research contract from Ministry of Defence,
U.K. in the area of non-destructive examination and fatigue behavior of
carbon fibre reinforced plastic composites. This was done in close
collaboration with the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE), Farnborough,
U.K. The work resulted in a Ph.D. Degree of Cranfield University, U.K.
Institute
of Technology , Banaras Hindu University (November 1975 to August 1995)
Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering (from November 1975 to February 1979), Reader in Mechanical Engineering (from February 1979 to February 1985) and Professor of Biomedical Engineering (from February 1985 to August 1995). The work involved teaching subjects like Materials Science and Engineering, Machine Design, Experimental Techniques, Nondestructive Testing Techniques, Fracture Mechanics and Composite Materials etc. Besides teaching, the work involved supervision of theses of students of higher degree, working on sponsored R&D projects, working on consultancy projects, laboratory administration and hostel administration as Administrative Warden. As a Professor of Biomedical Engineering; the work involved teaching and research in the areas of Biomaterials and Biomechanics. I was also Co-ordinator, School of Biomedical Engineering. I was member of the Academic Council and member of a number of bodies at the Institute and University levels. During my tenure at I.T., B.H.U. I was deputed abroad a number of time by the University. University of Bath, Bath , U.K (May 1979 to January 1980)
Post-doctoral Research Officer on a research contract from Polymer Engineering Directorate (PED) of the Science Research Council (SRC), U.K. The research was in the area of acoustic emission monitoring of fibre-reinforced plastic pressure vessels.
Hartshill Medical Institute and North Staffordshire University Stoke-on-Trent U.K.(October 1986 to April 1987)
This deputation was under the Exchange of Scientists scheme of the Royal Academy of the United Kingdom and the Indian National Science Academy (INSA). Under the scheme, I worked as a Visiting Fellow of the Royal Academy-cum-Visiting Professor of Biomedical Engineering. Work involved advanced research in the area of development of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic composite fracture fixation plates, polysulfone expandable rivets and development of suitable material for bridging large osteoperiosteal gaps in bones.
Embassy of India (February 1992 to July 1995)
Counsellor (Science and Technology)/Scientific Attaché on deputation leave from the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University. The work involved S&T diplomacy, assimilation and dissemination of latest S&T developments in fields such as engineering and technology, environment, agriculture, basic sciences etc. I was the Head of the S&T Wing of the Embassy and I was involved in administrative duties too. During this period, as a Science Diplomat, I visited a number of organisations in the United States for science diplomacy
