Project Information:

Problem Statement:

In recent years (particularly since 1998 when the RFC 2460 was published by the IETF as the revised IPv6 Specification) a lot of good work has been done in the areas of IPv6-enabling of existing applications, development of new IPv6-aware applications (particularly with enhanced security and mobility support) and evolution of IPv4 to IPv6 migration strategies etc. Similarly, a lot of work has been done in Grid computing area. However, except for a few large-scale international projects like the NSF-supported Telescience project, there has been no research project that joins IPv6 and Grid Computing together.

This project, therefore would aim at using IPv6-aware Grid Computing applications atop Microsoft-specific OS-based Grid Computing Infrastructure and enable early researchers and developers in this area to get their work evaluated for performance, compatibility, interoperability and security while focusing on the IPv6-specific and Application-specific QoS requirements.

The project shall be important from at least two viewpoints: a)- providing one of world's first research-based performance evaluation facilities in this domain; and, b)- creating an awareness amongst the developers and early adapters of IPv6 on the power that can be harnessed by the increasingly ubiquitous computing exploitable by the Grid-based applications.

This project is a major component of a larger project at BITS-Pilani entitled “The Grid-One Project: An IPv6-QoS-aware Grid Computing Initiative”.

Expected outcomes :

Research reports, workshop training material and short papers that could be used by the researchers, software developers and university students worldwide. As of now, no IPv6-specific report / data is available in the open literature for QoS-aware Grid-Computing Applications.

How will the results of this project be disseminated to others?

Results shall be disseminated to others through the project website, workshops and seminars.

Duration:  Two years.

This project is a major component of a larger project at BITS-Pilani entitled “The Grid-One Project: An IPv6-QoS-aware Grid Computing Initiative”. This project has several operating environments and the Microsoft's select Operating Systems and Linux-based environments comprise two major components.

Use of Funds

Purchase of hardware (servers, racks, interconnection devices and a few front-end devices to allow setting up a small grid-computing facility), “Indicative Monetary Award” to project students based on their work performance on a competitive basis and purchase of third-part software, if needed.

Other Support List other contributions to this project (cash, goods or services), if any.

Right now, none.
