Plato condemned Art as twice removed from reality, declaring it to have
imperfections that stem from the artist’s flawed perception of nature; but what he did
not take into consideration is that these imperfections are what truly bestow the
uniqueness present within each individual’s artistic productions.
It gives me great pleasure to witness this creative effort by the students of BITS Pilani,
who have edited and published this magazine as a record not only of the events that take
place in this institution, but also of their own individualities, leaving behind a mark
more permanent than Ozymandias ever could think of. Student life is transient: it
changes as the years pass, and each passing year only strengthens the value of the
impermanence of life and its facets. But Art is something that breaks through these
natural rules and establishes a permanence that not only fascinates, but also teaches.
The first humans to express their emotions on walls of a cave had no conception of
Aristotle or Shakespeare or Van Gogh, and yet their art today gives us insights into their
entire age: indeed embodying immortality! What we create today shapes not only our
inner worlds, but also shapes the reality that is and the reality that is yet to come.
I am delighted to behold the pursuit of creativity being promoted within this institution,
and congratulate the students and teachers who produced this wonderful edition of
Musings. I hope this zest continues and instills into the coming generations a similar
proclivity towards the Arts and the creative process.
