Tommy replied with a smile, “Just a way to meet you. Glad you came to meet me and didn’t
bail out this time.”
Tommy stood, took his overcoat, and wore it. They came out of the joint. Rain had stopped
now, and both hugged each other and went down their path.
Walking under the streetlights, Tommy felt that not just their ways, but their lives have also
diverged. Today, after meeting his best friend after so many years, he felt like the equation
between them cannot get back to how they were in childhood. It sucked to realize you no
longer have much in common with your friend besides past experiences. And the only way
we could presently communicate is through the past. It is a tough pill to swallow but this is
how the situation presently is. But at the same time just because you grew up with them does
not mean you have to stick around to live the same life. As Martin Luther King once said,
“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. Every step toward the goals requires
sacrifice, suffering, and struggle, the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated
individuals.” We should allow ourselves to be proud of ourselves and all the progress we
have made. With all these thoughts in mind he walked into the dark street, comfortable in the
unknown like always.
