going to get through this. Alive. Do you understand?” I shouted. “Too late now, Garry,” said
Derek.
Suddenly he took his gun and pointed at his head. I knew he would pull the trigger without
any hesitation. I looked away and closed my eyes. All I heard was a gunshot and then silence.
I sat there, crying.
The night seemed to pass as slowly as it could. I cried for a long time, I don’t know how
much. I could hear the growling of those monsters outside, those who ate flesh and blood.
But, amongst all that, I could hear that somewhere out there, there was someone who was
hiding in fear, waiting to be saved by us. Somewhere out there, there was a mother who was
giving her child hope that, ‘everything will be fine, those soldiers will save us.’ I could hear a
father fighting, without any guns, without any bullet-proof jacket, but just fighting with those
monsters to save his family till his last breath. All of them believed that we soldiers, we who
have power, we who are strong, would save them.
It is about 8 a.m. In about an hour from now, this city will vaporize, and maybe I will too,
with it. I don’t have much time but, if you are reading this, I am pretty sure you do. My friend
Derek believed that we all are monsters. I proved him correct. But maybe, you can prove him
wrong. Maybe you can help those who need it, and don’t let their hope die in vain, and prove
that you are no monster … can you?
