Julia: Well at least you get freedom from the stressful work out there in the corporate world.
Samson: work? It’s not just work. It’s the evolution of the human species as a whole from a
place of being subordinate to nature, to being in the process of becoming the masters of the
universe. People like us have taken control of the laws of nature which once were thought to
govern us. We’re able to produce entirely new variants of plants. Fruits, crossbred animals,
artificial fertilization, cloning just like gods!
Arnold: Whoa whoa hold on Sam, you’re going too far with that.
Samson: I’m not going too far my dear friend; you do not share the passion for human
evolution as I do. I understand the importance and significance of going to work tomorrow
while you clearly don’t. What I can make out of it is even if you work, you do not contribute
whole heartedly to this greater purpose. Not that it matters to the community as a whole but
your own level of satisfaction with what you do for most part of your life daily.
Arnold: Well, what difference does it make to you if you are sitting here right now with all
the stories you’ve told yourself about the purpose of work and evolution of the human
community. Nothing. You’re still sitting here looking at the same waves we’re doing but only
with an extra preoccupation of your mind with what to do tomorrow and how can it
contribute to the entire society. Don’t you feel the burden of this heavy responsibility of
carrying out the evolution of society by clicking some keys on a keyboard in your box sized
cubicle in a box sized building somewhere where no light is allowed to enter your office
because then the company’s manufacturing lights won’t be able to contribute to the
evolution? Don’t you feel your legs running heavy with the fatigue of going on in a hamster
wheel thinking the wheel is a symbol of travel from a certain state to a better, more evolved
state? If you don’t, I extend my apology for even bringing up this in front of you. Because the
best way to keep prisoners from escaping is never to let them know that they are in prison, by
giving them facilities inside the prison and continuously feeding them with a hope that a
better, more evolved “prison” is awaiting them if they try and make their best version of
prisoners come out by working harder and harder.
Julia interrupts Arnold as the discussion seems to take on a rather bitter turn. She insists that
Samson stays the night as it was already dark and the weather was getting rougher. Samson
agrees and they get inside to prepare for dinner. Julia enters the kitchen to keep the steaks for
cooking while Arnold rests near the fireplace. Samson excused himself to the washroom.
Julia is in the kitchen where she is preparing the steak whistling and humming when Samson
enters.
Samson: (Sniffing a long deep breath) Ah.steaks, oh so much I love them. And it smells so
good. Your hands have some magic I must admit.
Julia chuckles and looks at Sam with a smile.
Julia: They are just about to be ready. Go wash yourself up in the bedroom if you’d like.
There is a good steam bath we have up there.
Samson: Yeah sounds good, especially with these chills in the weather today.
Julia: Good, Go on then, the bedroom is to the left upstairs. Oh wait I’ll get you a towel
