A Socially Distanced Birthday

It was a cloudy day today
The crisp morning air flooded through the curtains
The city quiet from the rambunctious noise
Beautiful, but desolate
It felt as though the city was forwarded
To a time where we humans existed no more.
You’ll have to take my word for that
Because pictures cannot capture
The despondence of the streets
Our video call was
As delightful as it gets
It was the best we could have
As we can’t meet up at home.
As the sun goes down
I blow out the candles
All four of you sing
Hundreds of miles away
In the amber glow of the dusk
I cannot help but smile
At the warmth of your voices.
