here to meet me today. Let’s keep this friendship strong. You must be having my number, give
me a call whenever you can!
(Betty just sits there and smiles. Just then the bell chimes and the door opens. Betty’s father
Charles enters. The barista too enters and returns to the counter.)
Betty: Daddy! (Betty runs to her father and hugs him.)
Charles: Hey there princess! How did your coffee with Albert go? Hope you had a good time!
Betty: Yes daddy, I enjoyed meeting Albert. We talked and drank coffee and I even ate
chocolate pastry! He is my new friend!
Charles: That’s wonderful dear! Now, why don’t you go outside and wait? I have got something
to talk to Albert about. Don’t forget to say bye to your new friend!
Betty: (To Albert) Bye Albert!
Albert: Bye sweetie!
(Betty runs out the door. Albert stands up from his seat and reaches out his hand for a
handshake. Charles hugs him instead and gets a bit emotional)
Charles: (With a cracking voice) Thank you! Thank you so much.
Albert: Not me. It is my late wife Edith that you need to thank.
Charles: And I am forever grateful to Edith. The last few months were very hard for me. I
thought I would lose my princess. The doctors said that there was not much they could do to
fix the hole in her heart. The only option was a heart transplant. It wasn’t easy finding a donor
either- until we got a matching donor in the form of your late wife. I am thankful that Edith-
bless her soul!- decided to donate her organs after her death. Thank you! Thank you very much,
Albert!
Albert: No, thank you! I am really thankful to you for agreeing for me to meet little Betty.
That’s a great daughter you have got there. Today, when I met her, it was like I was with my
Edith again. To feel her heartbeat, it was..... (Albert lumps in his throat) Thank you, Charles!
(Both Albert and Charles hug each other again and go towards the counter to pay. They then
start walking towards the door.)
Charles: So, when are you leaving for Los Angeles? Tonight?
Albert: (Smiling) Oh no no! Tonight I’m leaving for New York. I am going to meet the person
that has received Edith’s kidney!
(Both smile as they exit the door.)
Curtains.
